El Primo: Authentic Mexican Street Tacos in Dubai

Bite into a taste of Mexico City

Dubai’s taco scene is about to get a serious upgrade. Chef Jonathan Colin — the Mexican-born chef formerly of Zuma, La Petite Maison and the cult-favourite K’IIN Supperclub — is opening El Primo, a neighbourhood taquería set to land in Al Wasl very soon. Think honest food, bold flavours, zero fuss and street food, the Mexico City way.

El Primo is all about the tacos Jonathan grew up eating on the streets of Mexico City. No reinvention, no overthinking — just traditional techniques done properly. Front and centre is Trompo al Pastor, shaved straight from a vertical spit, marinated in achiote and pineapple, exactly as it should be.

There’s also Suadero tacos, featuring slow-cooked brisket that’s marinated and cooked in its own fat for maximum richness, plus Baja-style fish tacos, prawn options and a solid line-up of vegetarian alternatives. This is comfort food with credibility.

In Spanish, El Primo means ‘the cousin’ — and that’s exactly the energy here. The aim is to make everyone feel like family, with food designed to be shared and enjoyed together. The space takes cues from 1980s Mexican taquerías, complete with red-and-white tiling and laid-back, casual vibes. Expect somewhere you’ll want to linger, chat and order ‘just one more taco’.

True to Mexican hospitality, house-made salsas come complimentary, encouraging you to mix, match and spice things up as you go.

To balance out those bold flavours, El Primo serves traditional Aguas Frescas, including Horchata (a refreshing rice milk drink with cinnamon) and Jamaica, a hibiscus tea that’s tart, floral and endlessly drinkable. They’re the kind of drinks you’ll keep topping up without realising.

Save room for dessert. Jonathan’s much-loved Vanilla Cheesecake, previously only available at K’IIN Supperclub, is making its first public appearance here. Light, creamy and already something of a fan favourite, it’s set to become a must-order.

With El Primo, Jonathan Colin isn’t chasing trends — he’s sharing a piece of home. Expect proper tacos, nostalgic design and the kind of easy-going atmosphere that turns a quick bite into an all-evening affair. Al Wasl, you’re about to get very well fed.
